3D animation has more roots in stop motion animation than traditional 2D animation. The stop motion film technique was used in Harryhausen’s 1963 film Jason and the Argonauts.

Although the stop-motion technique actually existed from the very early days of film (in the late 19th century); But it was Harryhausen who really brought the technique to life.

Also, the original King Kong movie, which was produced in 1933, used stop motion techniques extensively. By comparing 3D animations and stop motion, you can see that they have many similarities.

For stop motion, it involves capturing a model and filming one frame at a time. Minor changes are made to the model. Then they shoot again. This is actually to simulate movement.

By creating a series of frames and playing them between 12 and 70 frames per second, the model appears to be moving. This is a very painstaking process and by no means a walk in the park!

 

Comparison of 3D animation with stop motion

 

3D animation uses a similar method to stop motion, but is created by a computer. Everything is computer controlled. After applying the instructions, the output is done automatically by the computer.

3D animation is definitely less physically demanding compared to stop motion animation, but the basics are similar in nature. Even the lighting, texture and camera aspects of both animation methods have the same principles, with the exception that one takes place in reality and the other in the computer.

I think it’s much easier and faster for a stop-motion artist to transition into 3D animation and vice versa. This is in contrast to an artist with a career in 2D animation design.
